Recruitment process
TFLA
recruits university juniors, seniors and graduate students
with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who are motivated, high-achievers
interested in the broad fields of transportation. Qualified
students are required to submit a current resume, a letter
or unofficial transcript from the school verifying their
GPA, and a 500-word essay expressing what the student hopes
to gain from the internship.
Potential interns are recruited from ALL disciplines including: engineering, business administration, accounting, finance, marketing, human resources management, public administration, public policy, communications, environmental studies, urban planning and other applicable areas.
The student
can work either full time or part time at a rate not less than
$10 per hour.
Employer involvement
Potential
employers are responsible for reviewing resumes,
interviewing potential candidates, and making the final
hiring decision. Once hired, the employer is responsible for
assigning a mentor to facilitate the intern's professional
development. The intern should be given meaningful work
assignments and have the opportunity to grow professionally
as an employee of the organization. The mentor should work
closely with the student to maximize his/her internship
experience.
Results
To benefit the
students with frequent feedback on his/her performance, the
company will complete the Mid-term Intern Performance
Appraisal. At the completion of 500 hours or the internship,
whichever comes first, the company will also submit the
Final Intern Performance Appraisal, highlighting the
student's positive attributes and pointing out any
deficiencies.
As part of the
Real Time Internship Program, the employer must EITHER grant
the intern a job interview or write the intern a letter of
recommendation.
Everybody Wins!
This is truly
a win-win proposition. Participating companies benefit from
the fresh perspectives of a bright intern armed with a
state-of-the-art education. Enthusiastic interns can also
infuse increased motivation and production in company
employees. Companies have the assurance that they are
helping to prepare successful future professionals, and cost
to the company is minimal.
